I recently read a book by the Celtic historian Tom Campbell about the supposed Celtic paranoia. Mr. Campbell made some excellent points that Celtic fans over the years have adopted an almost victim role when things go against us, and we all have to put our hands up and admit to an extent he has a point.
When living in Glasgow and pointing out my "paranoid" rants to my Rangers supporting friends they were quick to remind me of the old Gers supporters saying that "Everything evens itself out over the season". Well apparently that saying no longer applies.
As an avid reader of the 'Follow Follow' rangers website (well, the nights are fairly drawing in!) it struck me that this ideology applies only when your team is winning, and sadly for the leaders of the confused, manic and downright depressed, there seems to be no light at the end of their tunnel. The two most vehement propagandists of lunacy on their site are "The Gub" and "Grandmaster Suck". The Gub entertains us weekly like some lunatic with his views on Rangers games and any other topical points of interest (to him). He finds it impossible to write an article about Rangers without bringing us into the equation, somehow. He believes that he is on some moral plane high above us all. "We are the People" if your capable of reading between his lines is the general theme, and his use of words such as "Yahoos" in reference to Celtic fans are frequent because in his little naïve world he believes we don't know what he means.
Grandmaster Suck (now there is a name we would all choose given a choice) descends from his lofty position in his little God world to preach from the pulpit to his minions. His edict recently was to tell his follow-followers, "Thou shall not use capital letters, or ye shall be banned" was classic while still allowing his loyal plebs to criticize Catholics and their religious beliefs and call Celtic fans any host of derogatory names they choose. He banned me for congratulating Rangers on a good away victory against the Russians. Yet it is ok to denigrate a whole section of Scottish society because it suits their agenda. So what exactly is their agenda?
In my Paranoid state as a non-Catholic Celtic fan maybe I could take the easy route and say they just have an a agenda which is anti-Celtic in general or maybe they are pandering to a group by courting controversy which in turn makes us click to their site and thereby fan their small little egos. Personally I think it's a mixture of both. The problem with this is they are creating the paranoid Rangers fan, which of course they will deny. They are quite happy to talk about the Pro-Catholic bias in Glasgow's city council and their rants about the biased "Pape" press, even though their accusations are not backed up by facts.
They shout and scream about 'poor Donald Findlay' being persecuted by the press for singing the Sash at a function. Did the paper bust down the door and seize him? Did they secretly tape him without his knowledge? Or did he stupidly and openly sing a sectarian song, which was duly taped by a Rangers supporter and sold to the highest bidder? The Gub O'Shyte and the Grandmaster-who's-opinions-suck are angry at the newspaper for printing a story about the Queen's Counsel for Scotland lowering and disgracing himself when they should be angry about the fact that the Vice Chairman of Glasgow Rangers embarrassed their club. He is of course a hero to them…well, sort of, until he disgraced himself by joining an anti-bigotry organization such as Nil by Mouth - now he's a traitor to their cause. Ironically enough, Findlay's support for Nil By Mouth, for many Celtic fans, really serves to prove the bogus nature of the whole campaign.
The powers that be at 'Follow Follow', however, thrive on the rants of their more fervent lunatic supporters by inventing stories as they go along. Many people 'over there' are normal guys who support and love their team but after a while of living in the sewer it's fairly inevitable that a lot of them will begin to stink. Neither and 'Follow Follow' nor its leaders seem to care. Their policy of banning people from their website who dare to prove their rants wrong or indeed anyone (including some Rangers fans) who dare to criticize their warped views is frightening.
It's easy to promote bigoted xenophobic views when you don't listen to anyone else and ban people who challenge your opinion. However, to have a rational discussion where you have to provide easily sourced facts, now that is a frightening concept to them. No wonder they give themselves such silly names. I would be embarrassed to be associated with what you lot write as well.
