Over two hundred people turned out for this years Kevin Barry Commemoration in Rathvilly, Co. Carlow on Sunday, November 4th ).
It was organised by the James Stephens cumann. The crowd marched behind a piper and the Smith/Harford/Doherty fife and drum band to the Kevin Barry monument in the town square watched by a large number of local people.
Chairman, Gerry Hanratty introduced the first guest speaker - ex P.O.W. Jan Taylor from England for whom a Fáilte Abhaile (Welcome Home) function had been held in Kilkenny recently. Taylor described the IRA as "an undefeated army whose courage and discipline over the years has been second to none".
The days second guest speaker was New Ross Sinn Fein councilor and general election candidate for Wexford, John Dwyer, who praised Republicans who had re-organised the party in the Carlow/Kilkenny area in recent months with an influx of new members and expressed his confidence that Sinn Féin would take a seat in South Leinster in the next general election.
